Description of Services:

This program is comprised of four inpatient units offering a total of 106 inpatient beds: Complex General Psychiatry Units A, B, C and D. Each unit provides assessment and short term treatment for individuals, aged 18 to 64 years of age who have a serious and persistent complex mental illness. These individuals typically team in the hospital or community. Patients who are referred to the program have complicated or multiple mental health diagnoses, significant emotional, behavioural and functional impairment. Diagnoses may include psychosis (treatment resistant), schizophrenia, mood disorder or anxiety.

An interprofessional team of mental health professionals who are trained in assessment and treatment of individuals with serious and persistent mental illness focus on screening, assessment, and treatment. They work with patients and families to establish a 6 to 8 week care plan with the goal of transitioning the patient back into the community.

The CGP team will continue to work with the referring community psychiatrist and team while the patient is in hospital. It is our expectation that the patient will return to the referring psychiatrist and team. Changes in community placement and team are not done while in hospital at Ontario Shores. This program offers assessment and treatment only; it is not a long term placement or discharge placement service.

Many patients who are accepted to Ontario Shores for ongoing stabilization will need to return to the referring hospital for outpatient follow up, therefore a take back agreement is required.
